How To Increase Your Productivity: Tips For Introverts, Extroverts or Ambiverts
Introverts, extroverts and ambiverts (combines the characteristics of the two previous types of personality) work and rest in different ways. Therefore, to increase productivity, they should take advantage of various tips.
How to understand what type of person you are
Is it as simple as introverts are shut-in personalities, and extroverts are sociable? In fact, everything is a bit more complicated. According to the psychologist Karl Jung, who invented the definitions of these types of personality, people of different types have different ways of restoring their strength. To “recharge” introverts need to be alone with yourself, and extraverts need a company.
Psychologist Jonathan Chick and his students identified four levels of introversion: social, thinking, anxious and restraining.
Social introverts are most suitable for describing a typical introvert. They prefer to keep alone or communicate with small groups. However, introverts of this type are not shy and do not get nervous around people.
Introverts-thinkers do not feel dislike for social activities, but often go into their thoughts. They are thoughtful and inclined to introspection.
Anxious introverts strive for loneliness, because they feel awkward in the company of other people. And sometimes they continue to experience anxiety even in solitude. They tend to constantly think about mistakes as happened, and possible.
People with restraining introversion first think, and then act. They are usually slow and always check every action before it is committed.
Extraverts are energized while in the company. They do not mind being in the spotlight, a long stay alone can psychologically drain them. As in the case of introverts, there are several levels of extraversion. The study, published in the journal Cognitive, Affective, & Behavioral Neuroscience, identifies two types: aggressive (or agentic) and affiliative extraversion.
Aggressive extroverts are enterprising people. They are confident, persevering, and they are driven by success. They feel comfortable in the spotlight and will not miss the opportunity to take a leadership position.
Affiliative extroverts are lovers of socializing. They are friendly and can easily melt the ice in a conversation with a stranger. For them, close relationships are very important, usually these people have a lot of friends.
Ambiverts are between an introvert and an extrovert. Ambiverts are the majority of people. According to Barry Smith, professor of psychology, 68% of the population make ambitions.
People of this type feel good in society, but at the same time it is important for them to sometimes be alone. They can not be sociable for too long or, conversely, alone. It is very important for them to observe the balance, the inclination to introvert or extraversion varies depending on the situation.
How to Maximize Productivity
If you understand what type of person you belong to, it will be easier for you to understand what you need to do in order to achieve maximum productivity.
Tips for introverts
Watch your surroundings.
Open spaces are designed for teamwork, but they have disadvantages in the face of the dubstep playing in your neighbor’s headphones, and a bunch of unnecessary everyday conversations. Such an office space is not suitable for everyone. If you want silence, look for a quiet corner or go to a cafe. Or ask the office manager to make special rooms where you can get your thoughts together.
Focus on individual communication.
Team projects and large-scale events are a nightmare for introverts. In some cases, it is not possible to avoid large meetings, but you can still allocate time for more personal and meaningful conversations face to face. After meetings, contact the right person and talk to him in a chat one-on-one or arrange individual meetings with team members to make you comfortable.
Do not hurry.
Office life is famous for its continuous pace of work, but introverts work best when they go headlong into one task in order to understand it thoroughly. Be sure to tell the manager about your ideal pace of work and sign up for participation in projects that require careful thought.
Prepare for meetings in advance.
At meetings, there are always two or three people who say the most. If you wait, when you are given the floor, most likely, you will not wait for anything. Therefore, it is better to study the plan of the meeting in advance and note what you plan to speak about. Try to get your message across as soon as possible until the discussion turns into another direction.
Tips for Extroverts
Choose an active activity.
The silence of the office can overwhelm you. For creative work, you need background noise, chatter and movement. If you feel that when you sit at the table, you do not get inspiration, move to the coffee shop. This place is suitable for any type of person. Who on earth will refuse a cup of coffee with pastries at work? Or you can take a break and take a walk. Sometimes, in order to restore strength, a simple change of scenery is enough.
Accept your workload challenge, but be careful.
While others are nervous because of the growing list of tasks and frequent meetings, you enjoy difficulties. Use your advantage and offer your candidacy for participation in major projects. But do not forget that extroverts can easily get carried away and take on too much. The workload motivates you to try, but remember that you should not go beyond, otherwise you risk burning out.
Take an hour to chat.
Communication gives you strength, but meetings can not always be good for social interaction. Therefore, it is better to allocate special time for communicating with people – for example, get in the habit of having a lunch every week with a new person. This is especially useful for extraverts, which work in distributed teams and do not have the opportunity to communicate in a natural way. If you work remotely, go to coworking, sign up for group fitness classes or go to networking events near your home.
Make time for self-examination.
You like to do many things at once and cross out the items in your to-do list, but usually it means that you jump from one task to another without analyzing your achievements. So after overcoming some major boundary, spend 20-30 minutes thinking about what worked and what is not and which results you have achieved.
Tips For Ambiverts
Use your flexibility.
Since you have the qualities of both an introvert and an extrovert, you can easily adapt to a rich social environment and feel good in a relaxed environment. Ambiverts are charged with the energy of others, so consider the lifestyle of the people you are communicating with, and try to be flexible to meet your needs without interfering with others.
Experiment and look for something that is right for you.
Depending on which features of your personality are stronger, some tips will suit you more than others. Sometimes everything can depend on your mood switches. Choose the methods that will be most effective for you, or try everything and see what works.
Advice for everyone
Do not sit in the comfort zone
All these tips should not drive you into the frame of one of the types of personality. Do not forget that sometimes you need to get out of the comfort zone and try something frightening and uncomfortable.
For example, introverts may find that a small socialization in the office will help them to further strengthen relationships and attract the attention of the boss. And extroverts can discover for themselves that to delegate someone a task or to give way to the spotlight is their own good.
Everyone needs universality
Few of us are pure introvert or extrovert. Most are a mixture of these two types of personality plus personal characteristics and habits.
Usually we are more strongly associated with one of the types, but this should stop us from teamwork. Introverts do not always have the opportunity to work in silence, and extroverts can sometimes be assigned a solitary task. Each type of person must make compromises, and this is normal.
